“Published” is a drama about a news paper company from a suburb outside of New York that takes place during the early 1930’s depression. The show is centered on and narrated by a twenty-three-year-old Betty Thompson, who is constantly trying to prove to her boss that she is worthy of a better position. As the head of the “New York Journal”, Joseph B. Williams has to deal with his staff, reporters, and his family at home. His family seems like the perfect American dream but he deals with his problems by drinking and gambling, which he hides from everyone else but his wife and kids. The times are especially tough for him since it is in the middle of the depression, and Williams runs his newspaper against rival ones that are more successful than his.   

    Betty wants to be a writer but is frequently shut down by every newspaper in town until she finally gets her foot in the door with Joseph, but only as an assistant. Throughout the series, she takes stories from other writers that they cannot tackle themselves, and Joseph eventually lets her write under an alias so that no one will find out it is her. When she does write her own articles, more papers start to sell because of her stories.

“9 Lives” is a drama series about a set of male twins in their early thirties. One of them, Dan, suffers from schizophrenia and the other one is a con artist, Michael, who uses his brother’s illness to his advantage. Michael regularly likes to impersonate policemen (or anyone with any sort of authority) and gets away with it by convincing his brother Dan that he did it. Being that Dan has a mental illness, Michael gets away with his schemes. The few times his crimes reach court, his brother is let go as long as he takes his medicine and keep seeing his doctor.

    Each episode starts with their psychiatrist Dr. De la Fuente, whose face is never shown on screen. His character is the voice of reason while trying to help not just one twin but both. He is the only one that knows about Michael’s switch with Dan but never says anything to the police because of doctor and patient confidentiality and laws in that state. Dr. Foster prescribes Dan medication but Michael does not give it to him in fear that his twin brother might make progress with his illness.
